the British Royal Air Force pilots have discovered the properties of the blueberry in the 2nd World War. They used to eat blueberries to improve vision in the dark during night flights. This practice has proven effective and has attracted the interest of researchers have confirmed the merits.

Bilberry indeed favors the regeneration of rhodopsin, the purple pigment of the retina that allows us to see in dim light. It also contains anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants that slow the premature aging of the retina (2). The antioxidant vitamins and minerals (vitamin E, selenium and zinc) act synergistically with the blueberries to delay the aging eye. The lens is particularly rich in Vitamin C.

A recent study has shown a correlation between high plasma levels of vitamin C significantly reduced prevalence of cataract (3). A clinical study showed that vitamin E supplementation could reduce the progression of AMD. Present in the membranes of the eye, zinc may slow or prevent the onset of AMD, and this effect is enhanced by the addition of antioxidants (4).
